LINCOLNVILLE – Albert Dawson Wootton, 86, died peacefully Feb. 8, 2007, at Waldo County General Hospital, Belfast. “Moose,” as he was known throughout his life, was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Poolesville, Md., and was the son of Albert and Josephine (Dawson) Wootton. For 33 years he was employed at the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co., interrupting his career for military service in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. After an early retirement in 1972, Moose moved with his family to Lincolnville. His employment during retirement included owning a rubbish removal service, Lincolnville Telephone Co., the Portland newspapers and driving a Lincolnville school bus. He served as president of the Camden Lion’s Club; the Lincolnville Fire Department; the Lincolnville Improvement Association; and the French, Upper and Lower Cemetery Committees. A former member of the First Congregational Church, Camden, he more recently was an active member of the United Christian Church, Lincolnville. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 30, King David’s Masonic Lodge No. 62, served as a Lincolnville Town Selectmen and on the Anita Card Montgomery Fund committee. An active participant and contributor of many Lincolnville projects, Moose volunteered his time as bus driver taking school teams to athletic events. In 1988, he was honored as Townsperson of the Year by the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce. Moose was predeceased by a brother, two sisters, a brother-in-law, and a nephew. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jeannette; his daughter, Martha Jo Hipsher and her husband, Jeffrey, of Topsham; a son, Charles Wootton and his wife, Susan; and two grandchildren, Jessica Ann Wootton and Nicholas Andrew Wootton, all of West Rockport. As husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, community member, trash man and bus driver, “Papa Moose” touched the lives and hearts of many people of all ages. He will long be remembered through the countless stories his family and friends will share. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the First Congregational Church, Camden. A reception for family and friends will be held after at the church. A private graveside committal service will be held in the spring.
