SAN DIEGO – Albert H. Friedman, prominent businessman, civic leader and World War II veteran, passed away April 8, 2007. Born Nov. 1, 1916, in Bangor, he was the fourth child born to Minnie and Meyer Friedman. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1939 and entered the armed forces in 1941 as a second lieutenant with the 26 Infantry Division – Yankee division, and rose up through the chain of command to retire with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Upon his separation from the military, Al returned to Bangor to join his uncle at Friedman Furniture Co., which he eventually owned. In 1946, he married Sylvia Blankenbery and they brought forth sons, Mark and Mitchell Friedman. Al has been closely identified with Jewish leadership in Bangor as well as in San Diego. In 1988 he remarried, this time to Janice Klaskin and added three bonus children to his life. Together they share six grandchildren.
