LEVANT – Alfred Charles Dow, 77, husband of Elizabeth “Betty” (Mullen) Dow, died peacefully Feb. 9, 2005, at Ross Manor Waterman Rehabilitation Center in Bangor. He was born in Dorchester, Mass., Sept. 22, 1927, the son of Charles and Alta (Anderson) Dow. Alfred grew up in Patten with his parents and siblings. He lived in Levant most of his life. He was a crane operator for Merrill Transport for more than 25 years. He also worked for Eastern Bituminous Materials and the D&S Corporation. Alfred loved to drive and he logged over 3 million accident-free miles. In his early years he attended the South Levant Baptist Church. Betty and Alfred enjoyed several winters in Florida where they made many friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Betty; his sisters, Virginia Lister, Lucy Seile, Martha Clukey and husband, Dick, all of Corinna; a brother, Howard Dow and his wife, Charlene, of Norfolk, Va.; a brother-in-law, Robert Brooks of Athol, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his only son, Terrence C. Dow; two sisters, Louise Irish and Esther Brooks; a brother, Leslie Dow; and several brothers-in-law. Alfred will be remembered by several close friends. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor, with the Rev. Adam T. Soderberg, pastor of the East Orrington Congregational Church, officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until the service at 2 p.m. Private interment will be in the family lot Waugh Cemetery, Levant, later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Levant Heritage Library, Box 1, Levant, ME 04456, or the South Levant Baptist Church, Horseback Road, Levant, ME 04456.
