ALFRED ‘FRED’ JOHN MARQUIS BREWER – Alfred “Fred” John Marquis, 80, husband of Joan Elizabeth (Durgain) Marquis for 53 years, died peacefully in his Brewer home from complications from cancer on Oct. 27, 2003. He was born June 20, 1923, in East Corinth, the son of Leonard “Pete” and Gladys (Dodge) Marquis. Fred attended John Bapst High School from 1939-1941, where he was an all star basketball player and team captain. He enlisted in the U.S. Army-Air Force in 1941 and trained to be a tail gunner. Fred worked for 34 years at Eastern Fine Paper Mill in Brewer, primarily in the shipping department, until he retired in 1985. He was a dedicated fan of the Boston Celtics and Boston Red Sox, and loved to go hunting and fishing with his friends. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and enjoyed his many friendships. Fred will be lovingly remembered by family and friends for his dry wit and humor. Surviving in addition to his wife, Joan, are two sons, Terry Marquis of Holden, and Brian Marquis and his wife, Gini, of Brewer; daughter, Linda and her husband, Perry Speaker, of Hermon; grandchildren, Jack Wagner, Myrna Engel, Gavin Speaker, Jaclyn Speaker, Summer and Vaughn Schafer, Scott and Mathew Marquis; brother, Wilbert “Will” Marquis of Brewer; several nieces and nephews; many friends and his loving cats, Squeeky and Merlin. He will be sadly missed by all his family, friends and pets. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Brookings-Smith Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 3177 will perform a memorial service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, at Brookings-Smith Clark-Piper Chapel, with Rev. Rudolph Leveille officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
