DELRAY BEACH, Fla., BOSTON, Mass., BANGOR, and PORTLAND – Alfred Todtman, 92, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 203, at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield, Conn. He was born May 11, 1912, in Roxbury, Mass., a son of the late Solomon J. and Clara (DeYoung) Todtman. Mr. Todtman was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50+ years, Helen Gass Todtman and a brother, Edward Todtman. Survivors include his daughters, Nancy Zalman and her husband, Marvin, of Ottawa, Ontario, Marjorie Winokur and her husband, Michael, of Stratford, Conn.; brother, Herbert Todtman and his wife, Joan, of California; three grandchildren, Stacey Gallippi and her husband, Valerio, of Maple, Canada, Michael Zalman of Vancouver, Canada, Cheryl Munk and her husband, Jason, of Queens, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Max and Rena Gass of Florida, Esther Hoos of Westville, Conn., Rae Grossman of San Diego, Calif., Beverly Gass of Florida and several nieces and nephews. Alfred graduated from the High School of Commerce in Boston, June 4, 1929, and in 1930 entered the Massachusetts National Guard Reserves, Professional Headquarters Company 101 Infantry and was honorably discharged in January of 1933. Between 1930 and 1940, he worked as a shipper and did general maintenance of machinery and motors at Barnard Print in Boston. He then went on to become a test engineer for sound, telephone, clock, fire and signaling equipment call systems at Holtzer-Cabot Electric Co., in Boston. In 1940, he earned a rating of an electrician from the United States Civil Service Commission to work in the Navy Yard at Charlestown 1943 Alfred was licensed by the FCC as a First Class radio and Telephone Operator. He was licensed to operate any radio station of the specified type. From 1940 to 1994 he installed, repaired and tested radio equipment of various types at the Navy Yard in Charlestown, Mass., and U.S. Navy Dry Docks. In 1946, the family moved to Bangor. Alfred became a successful businessman in Orono as co-owner of Penobscot Auto Co. He was a Shriner for many years and a member of Kora temple of Lewiston. He was especially interested in and proud of the work being done at the Shriner’s Burn Hospital in Boston, Mass. He was an assistant Boy Scout Leader in Bangor. One of his Scouts was the former Senator and Secretary of Defense, William Cohen. He was an active member and past president of the Pine Tree Chapter of Bnai Brith in Bangor and for many years, he served as treasurer of Beth Abraham Synagogue in Bangor. He volunteered or the Girl Scouts where he was often seen doing electrical work as a licensed electrician at the Girl Scout Camp Natarswi and also volunteered at the workshops for the mentally impaired. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at the Abraham L. Green & Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road, Fairfield, Conn., with interment following at Beth Sholom Cemetery on Reid Street in Fairfield, Conn.
