ORONO – Walter Weeks Turner, 81, died Nov. 18, 2003, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 3, 1922, in Augusta, the son of Otto and Catherine (Weeks) Turner. Walter was a graduate of Cony High School in Augusta. He earned his Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1947 and began his teaching career at the University of Maine in September of 1947. He retired as Professor Emeritus in January of 1990. The University of Maine College of Engineering honored him with the Ashley Campbell Award in 1986. For many years he was a member of the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors and was honored for distinguished service in 1989. He was a member of Maine Society of Professional Engineers, Maine State Board of Registration, NCEES, Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, and the Francis Crowe Society for Engineering Excellence. He was also a member of the Church of Universal Fellowship, the Maine Christian Association Board at the Wilson Center, Orono-Old Town Kiwanis, the Orono Chapter of American Field Service, and a driver for Meals for Me. After his retirement he enjoyed researching and writing the histories of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Maine, the Orono Chapter of AFS, and Church of Universal Fellowship. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy U. Turner of Orono; three daughters, Barbara J. Turner of Orono, Catherine Turner Vanderhoof and her husband, Paul, of Caldwell, N.J., Elizabeth J. Turner and her husband, Dwight D. Trueblood, of Durham, N.H.; one son, Robert W. Turner and his wife, Elizabeth J. Jensen, of Clinton, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Amy Johnson, Benjamin and Anne Turner, Dylan and Gregory Trueblood; two brothers-in-law, Robert Ullman and Earl Ullman and his wife, Doris and children; a cousin, Dorothy Weeks, many other cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a younger brother, Robert Wesley Turner. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Church of Universal Fellowship, 82 Main St., Orono, with the Rev. Stephen St. Claire, officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Orono. Gifts in Walter’s memory may be sent to the endowment fund of the Church of the Universal Fellowship, The Maine Christian Association Wilson Center, 67 College Ave., Orono, or the Walter Turner Scholarship Fund, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Maine, Barrows Hall 5708, Orono.
