CORINNA – Alice’s prayer was answered Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, when God called her home and reunited her with her beloved husband, John Bird and son John Stewart Bird. She was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Corinna, a daughter of John and Ethel (Barker) Thurston. Alice was valedictorian for the Class of 1936, at Corinna Union Academy. On Sept. 1, 1940, she married John W. Bird. She was employed for 20 years as a teller at the Newport Trust Company in Corinna. She was a girl scout troop leader and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. John and Alice will be remembered for collecting and sending numerous gifts to Togus. She attended the Corinna United Methodist Church where she and her husband sponsored the church youth groups. They enjoyed keeping in contact with the group members throughout the years. Alice enjoyed being with her husband, John camping and attending local sports events in Corinna and Newport. She is survived by a brother, Stewart and wife, Greta Thurston of Caribou; a brother-in-law, William Bird of Plymouth; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Jude of Orrington and Kathleen “Jody” Leavitt of Corinna; a special cousin, Marion S. Collins of Dover-Foxcroft; nieces, nephews, and cousins, including a special nephew, Michael and wife, Heidi Thurston, of Old Town; and niece, Patricia and husband, Charles Scagliotti of Allentown, Pa. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years Dec. 22, 2004, and her son, John Stewart Bird in 1957. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Corinna United Methodist Church with the Revs. Sharon Lovejoy and Bruce Hudson officiating. Friends may call from noon until the time of services. Spring interment will be in the Corinna Village Cemetery, Corinna. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Orono Commons.
