MILLINOCKET – Alice E. Shanks, 95, wife of the late Stewart Shanks, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at a Millinocket hospital. She was born Oct. 19, 1911, in Millinocket, the daughter of George and Ethel (Bazley) McLean. Alice was educated in Millinocket schools and was a graduate of the Presque Isle Normal School, Class of 1930, and later received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maine. Alice began her teaching career at a one-room schoolhouse in Sherman, before teaching in the Millinocket school system, retiring in 1973. She was a founding member of the Millinocket AARP and a longtime member of the Millinocket Baptist Church. Alice was also a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, the Maine Education Association, the National Association of Retirees, and a member and past president of the Millinocket Senior Literary Club. She is survived by a son, James G. Shanks Sr. of Brownfield; a daughter, Ethel Doyle and her husband, Stanley, of Millinocket; four sisters, Hazel Thompson of Spokane, Wash., Mary Marshall and her husband, Frank, of Visalia, Calif., Ellen Phillips of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Jean Barrick and her husband, Wayne, of California; two brothers, Retired Lt. Col. Lawrence McLean and his wife, Jessie, of Texas and David McLean and his wife, Hisako, of Banning, Calif.; three grandchildren, Becky McMahon and her husband, Phillip, of Spokane, Wash., Georgia Ross and her husband, Martin, of Colbert, Wash., and James Shanks Jr. and his wife, Renee, of Brownfield; a brother-in-law, James Shanks and his wife, Doris, of Millinocket; a sister-in-law, Jean Welch of Belfast; six great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas and Nathan Carman, Tyler Keener, Cody McMahon and Michael Ross; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, Alice was predeceased by two brothers, James McLean and Maurice McLean; and a sister, Carolyn Moore. Friends are invited to visit with the family 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Bouchard – Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, with funeral services commencing 2 p.m. with the Rev. Rudy Homchuck officiating. Interment will be at Millinocket Cemetery.
