PITTSFIELD – Alice Elizabeth Rollins, 96, a longtime resident of Burnham, most recently of Cross Street, Pittsfield, died peacefully Friday, July 21, 2006, surrounded by her family. Alice was born Dec. 2, 1909, in Hollowell, a daughter of Morris Dana and Elizabeth (Wescott) Goodridge. Mrs. Rollins attended Burnham schools. She was employed by Reynolds Brothers Furniture Co. for many years and also by Colby College. The later years of her life were spent at home with her family, which she loved very much. She enjoyed knitting, especially making mittens for her grandchildren, great-grand-children and friends. Alice had a great love for animals, especially dogs and cats. She spent much time picking all types of berries, gardening vegetables and flowers, canning and making jam, baking pies and cakes, shopping and enjoying those great times spent with the family around the table. She is survived by two sons, Freeman Rollins Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Fairfield and Gary Rollins and his wife, Beverly, of Pittsfield; two daughters, Ruth Wells of Pittsfield and Edith Gamblin and her husband, Walter, of Detroit; a sister-in-law, Rachel Bonin of Northport, 22 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Alice was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Freeman A. Rollins Sr.; two sons, Carlton and Carl Rollins; four brothers, Roy, Newell, Carl and Charles Goodridge; and a sister, Evelyn Goodridge. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 24, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Easy Street, Pittsfield. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, at the church with the Rev. Margaret Beckman officiating. Interment will be held immediately after the service at the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield. The family wishes to thank Alice’s caregiver, Jeannette Martin of Newport, Pittsfield Health Care and SVH Homecare for their love and support. Arrangements are entrusted to Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel.
