OLD TOWN – Alice F. Smart, 81, loving wife of the late Paul Smart, died March 18, 2004, at an Orono healthcare facility. She was born April 26, 1922, in Old Town, a daughter of Reuben Dyer and Mary Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Coffin. Over the years, Alice was employed in the Old Town/Orono area but focused primarily on being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and the caretaker for family members and friends who needed her help. In her later years, she took pleasure in her new found friends at Penobscot Terrace and Orono Commons and continued to enjoy crocheting, reading and jigsaw puzzles. She is survived by two sons, Larry Smart and his wife, Susan, of Englewood, Fla., Michael Smart and Lida Jones of Milford; a daughter, Anne Marie Tauses and her husband, Albert, of Mobile, Ala.; two grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Joshua Tauses of Kingfield, and Adrienne Tauses of Tampa, Fla.; two step-grandchildren, Stephanie Malisos of Windham, N.H., and Chad Cole of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Coffin of Old Town, and Germaine Coffin of Camden; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Paul Smart, in 1998; three brothers, Alson, Harry and Arthur Coffin; a sister, Edwina Turner; and a step-granddaughter, Susan Malone. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Parish, Old Town, with the Rev. Normand Richard celebrant. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Old Town. Immediately following the service all are invited to return to the Holy Family Parish Center for a light luncheon and continued fellowship.
