VENICE, Fla., BELFAST and FALMOUTH – Allan Mollison, 99, passed away May 8, 2007. Allan was born in Condorret, Scotland, where he started learning to be a stone cutter at age 14, and earned his apprentice. In 1925, at age 17, he and his father came to America, sponsored by his uncle who owned a quarry. Allan traveled throughout to find work cutting stone at Hall Quarry, Mount Desert Island, Swan’s Island, Vinalhaven, and Oak Hill. After the paving industry slowed and then stopped due to new road materials, Allan moved to Portland, to re-cut the paving stones on Congress Street. He was an expert paving cutter, cutting 140 paving blocks in a day, 160 was record. He was paid five cents a block. Next, Allan began hauling pulpwood, not wanting any idle time with his truck, he also plowed snow for the city of Belfast. He sold this business and began hauling fertilizer for Summer Fertilizer, Stockton. Then came an offer to haul cement so he expanded into the cement business. He also started a building material business, which he expanded into the house building industry. While running these businesses, he also bought, sold, and raced horses. Allan also operated the Bangor State Fair for several years. Allan was a member of many groups and organizations throughout his life, life member of Masonic Lodge AF & AM, Scotland; past patron of Primrose Chapter OES; member of the York Rite Bodies, Belfast; member of the Scottish Rite Bodies; 50-year member of Anah Shrine; 50-year member of the Waldo County Shrine Club; life member of the Belfast Rotary Club, King Solomon’s Council, Grand Commander’s Award Knight Templar, and Maine Racing Commission. Allan served on many boards some of them being the Maine State Harness Race Commission; Water Commission, Belfast; Depositors and Key Bank, Raceway Development, Lewiston; and Waldo County General Hospital, Belfast. Allan was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Imogene Ames; and daughter, Robina Brown. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Patricia Mollison; children, Imogene and husband, Richard McWilliams; son-in-law, Harold Brown; stepchildren, Cheryl and Antonio Di Salvatore, Douglas and Carrie Campbell, and James Hoskins; grandchildren, Juanita “Chipper” Berry, Duncan and Susan Brown, Joan and Scott Dolan, Sheila and Michael Palczyniski; stepgrandchildren, Antonio, Matthew, Lindsay, and Daniel Di Salvatore, Ashley and Jeremy Valverde; great-grandchildren, Leana Berry, Connor and Lance Dolan, Cameron, Matthew and Elizabeth Palczynski, and Valerie and Jeremiah Valverde.
