BANGOR – Althea Bernice Swan, 87, died Jan. 30, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Feb. 5, 1916, in Bangor, the daughter of George and Minnie (Paine) Ware. Althea graduated from Bangor High School then went on to graduate from the Gilman Commercial School. She was a longtime member of the Columbia Street Baptist Church and a member of the Mary Murray Circle. Althea was also a member of the Bangor/Brewer Christian Women’s Club. She worked for Rice & Miller Hardware in Bangor for a number of years. Althea had a great fondness for animals and loved her dogs and cats over the years. She is survived by three children, John W. Swan of Standish, Robert G. Swan of Bangor, Carolyn Whipkey and husband, Rick, of Katy, Texas; a granddaughter, Megan Colette of St. George, Utah; sister, Barbara Mann and husband, Melvin, of Charleston, S.C.; and a brother, Donald Clukey and wife, Maria, of Truckee, Calif. She was predeceased by her husband, Willard F. Swan, in 2003; and a granddaughter, Amanda R. Swan. Friends are invited to meet with the family 2-4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 1 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, with the Rev. Peter Sprague, pastor of Columbia Street Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor.
