NAPLES, Fla. – Althea Wildes Newman, 89, formerly of Bangor, died April 9, 2008. She was born June 27, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of Fred H. and Lillian (Ladd) Wildes. Raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Newman played for the New York Automats, a professional basketball team. Before moving to Naples, Fla., 30 years ago, she resided in Bangor, where she raised her five sons and was active in the community as a member of Citizens Board of Recreation, past president of P.E.O. and a member of All Souls Congregational Church, Bangor, and D.A.R. Mrs. Newman was an avid golfer and a member of Quail Run Golf Club, Naples, Fla. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Frederic S. Newman Sr.; five devoted sons, Frederic S. Newman Jr. and his wife, Hiroko, Paul W. Newman and his wife, Martha, Robert S. Newman and his wife, Patricia (Reynolds), Thomas R. Newman and his wife, Renee, and Richard W. Newman and his wife, Heidi; 11 loving grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred E. Wildes and his wife, Angelina, and Stanley L. Wildes and his wife, Patrice. She was predeceased by two sisters, Muriel Doyle and Pauline Rogers. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at The Carlisle, Naples, Fla. There will be another memorial service scheduled at All Souls Congregational Church, Bangor, with an inurnment after at Mount Hope Cemetery.
