MACHIAS – Alton O. Joy, 81, passed away April 2, 2008, at a Bangor hospital, after a brief illness. He was born July 1, 1926, in Addison, the son of the late Harvey and Helen (Crowley) Joy. After graduating from Addison High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Alton served on the USS Shelby during World War II. Alton married Julia Hill in 1950. He attended Washington State Normal School, graduating in 1952. He joined Tuscan Masonic Lodge, Addison, in 1948. He would have had 60 years of membership this year. Alton worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance for more than 30 years. Alton was very involved in community organizations. During his life, he was a charter member of Machias Valley Boat Club, member of Anah Temple Shrine, served on Machias School Board, was the harbormaster for Machias, served as bail commissioner and was a member of American Legion Post No. 9. Alton was an avid card player and enjoyed playing poker. He also enjoyed hunting. Alton baled hay for 57 years, never missing a summer. Alton is survived by his children, Edwin H. Joy of Machias and Andrea J. Godin and husband, Jeffrey, of Waterville; grandchildren, Marcus Alton Godin and Andrew Jeffrey Edwin Godin of Waterville; sister, Arlene Guptill of Addison; brothers, George Joy of Jacksonville, Fla., Frank Joy and wife, Joyce, of Unionville and Richard Joy of Newburyport, Mass.; aunt, Doris Joy of Addison; many nieces, nephews; special friend and loving companion, Gay Miller of Machias; and many friends too numerous to mention. Alton was predeceased by his wife, Julia, in 1984; and a brother, John Joy, in 1993. A time of remembering and visiting will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Centre Street Congregational Church.
