BANGOR – Anita Thanas Economy, 81, wife of the late George J. Economy died unexpectedly Dec. 8, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. She was born July 27, 1923, in New Bedford, Mass. the daughter of Christo and Alice Thanas. Anita graduated from Brookline High School. She married George in 1951. She and George enjoyed traveling, their summer cottages at Lamoine and later Bar Harbor. Anita will be remembered as a gourmet cook. Together, they owned the Checkmate Restaurant in Bangor, the Bar Harbor Restaurant and the IGA Foodliner in Bangor. She was a sustaining member of the Junior League, a patron of the arts and a member of St. John Episcopal Church. Surviving are two daughters, Betsy Economy Preble and husband, David, of Bangor, Wendy Economy Kallergis and husband, Nick, of Cape Coral, Fla.; one son, George James Economy and wife, Linda Long, of Seattle, Wash.; three sisters, Lil Tasho of Brockton, Mass., Judith Thanas Anderson of Newton, Mass., Connie Abele of San Jose, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Christopher and Alexandra Roberts, Nicholas and Katherine Anita Kallergis, Evelyn, Alison and William Economy; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be greatly missed by her weekly social lunch bunch. Relatives and friends may call 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, French Street, Bangor, with the Rev. Kevin Hollsapple, rector, officiating.
