BANGOR – Anna Emerson (McVeigh) Osterby, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007. Finally, freed from Alzheimer’s, the disease that held her hostage for more than 10 years. Anna was born April 24, 1919, in the family homestead at Sylvesters Cove, Deer Isle, the daughter of Amy (Sylvester) and Frank McVeigh. After graduating from Island High School, she attended Farmington Normal School where she obtained a teaching certificate. Anna lived many years in New York City, employed by First National Bank. She was active in many community groups there, including an outdoor club, where she met her future husband, Charles Osterby. Returning to her home at Sylvesters Cove in the late 60s with her children, she was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in the Deer Isle Post Office until her retirement. Anna was an active member of Deer Isle Grange for many years and served several terms as secretary. She was also a member of Sunset Congregational Church. Anna is survived by her children, Karl Osterby and his wife, Lori, Amy Lambert and her daughter, Tara Gould, Sandra Osterby and her family, and Ellen Pitts and her husband, Nathan and their children, Jeremiah and Vincent Pitts. Anna was predeceased by her parents; her only sibling, Clifford McVeigh; many cousins and friends. Burial was in the family plot at Sunset Cemetery. Services will be private.
