FARMINGTON – Annette McManus, 102, died Dec. 9, 2006, with her family by her side. Born Aug. 5, 1904, at Eagle Lake, she was the 11th of 16 children to Melvina (Simard) and George Michaud. At the age of 16, Annette attended normal school in Fort Kent and was teaching school one year later. She then furthered her education at Presque Isle Normal School and Columbia University, New York City. She taught school for 32 years, mostly in Van Buren, where she was cited as one of the best elementary teachers. In 1930, Annette married Harry McManus, a lawyer from Washburn. They made their home in Van Buren where they raised four children. Later she lived in Brewer, Bangor, Skowhegan, Farmington and Bonita Springs, Fla. Annette provided great love, support, inspiration and strength to all her family, to hundreds of students and to too many good friends to count. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Harry; a daughter, Mona Jean; a daughter-in-law, Peggy (Carlisle) and 15 siblings. She is survived by three children, James of Skowhegan and his wife, Claudette, Michael of Avon and his wife, Jean and Lillian “Sis” of Ferndale, Wash.; seven grandchildren, David and his wife, Lora, Daniel and his companion, Patricia, Cathy, Thomas, Joseph and his companion, Lara, Maria McManus and Nicole Thiffault-Zamzow and her husband, Jason; and also her three great-grandsons, Matthew, currently serving in Iraq, James McManus and Cashel O’Malley. We want to thank the people at Sandy River for the exceptional care that they gave Annette throughout the nine years she lived with them. Due to winter conditions and family considerations, services and internment, at Eagle Lake, will be announced later. As the family celebrates the life and mourns the loss of this wonderful woman; we encourage doing something special for your esteemed elders in lieu of sending flowers. Arrangements are being conducted by the Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, 14 East Main St., Fort Kent.
