ARLENE JANE ‘TWIN’ (SMITH) SMITH BROOKLIN – Arlene Jane “Twin” (Smith) Smith died unexpectedly Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, in Deer Isle. She was born April 2, 1923, in Brooklin, to Rodney Lewis and Lettie Beryl (Flye) Smith. Arlene grew up in Brooklin, graduating from Brooklin High School in 1941, then attended Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery, better known as Fannie Farmer’s in Boston. She worked for many years in her family’s business, The Lookout at Flye Point, an inn and restaurant established by her great-uncle, Owen Flye, in 1896, continued by her parents and now owned by her son, Butch. She was a phenomenal cook who always had room at her table for family, neighbors and friends, old and new. Her long association with the Brooklin Garden Club gave her much pleasure, as did her vegetable and flower gardens. During World War II, she worked for Grumman Aircraft at Bethpage, Long Island, N.Y. and after returning to Brooklin, married and worked with her husband as mechanic and bookkeeper at Smith’s Garage on Naskeag Point until their retirement. She served Brooklin as town treasurer for 25 years and worked for various local and summer families, including those of Dr. Hayes, the Millikens and the Goodards. She is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by her brother, Robert Wallace Smith of Brooklin; sons, Robert Francis “Butch” Smith and Nelson Allen “Hoggie” Smith, both of Brooklin; daughter, Martha B. Higgins of Trenton; grandson, Reuben Smith of Portland; nieces and nephews, Andrea Doria Mathers of Auburn, Wyo., Holly Sue Mathers, Marie Jane Mathers and her son, Timothy Sean Mathers, all of Lyndonville, Vt., Michael Dennis Mathers and his wife, Jennifer Jill (Burak) Mathers and their daughter, Aleta Janine “Al” Mathers of Newark, Vt., David Brian Smith and his wife, Dawn Archambault and their daughter, Gabrielle of Holden, Mass., Carl Smith of Cape Coral, Fla. and Rodney Smith and Peter Smith of New Hampshire and their families, as well as many special friends. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Arthur Allen Smith; her twin sister, Alline Flye “Al” (Smith) Mathers and her husband, Raymond Lawrence Mathers of East Burke, Vt.; and her brother, Lewis Hadley Smith and his wife, Marie (Lang) Smith of Lantana, Fla. Services and a celebration of Arlene’s life, will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at The Lookout, Flye Point Road, Brooklin with the Rev. James Lufkin officiating. Arlene wished to be cremated and interment will be at a later date at Naskeag Cemetery, next door to her home of more than 50 years. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Arlene may make gifts in her name to The Brooklin Keeping Society, P.O.
