JONESPORT and GRAY – The Reverend Arthur Cecil Woodward, 83, died Dec. 16, 2005, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Reverend Carolyn Calor Woodward. He was born Oct. 11, 1922, in Gouldsboro, the son of Ernest and Myra Woodward. Arthur graduated from Jonesport High School in 1941, and then worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before joining the Naval Air Force in World War II. After the War, he returned home to Jonesport. With the help of his brother Wayne, he owned and operated Woodward Oil Co. In 1963, Arthur moved his family to Bangor and entered the Bangor Theological Seminary. He served churches in Gouldsboro and Prospect Harbor, as an interim student minister during his schooling years, where boyhood friends, grammar school teachers and relatives, including his parents, were often in attendance. Once graduated, he became the pastor of Second Congregational Church in Brewer, where he was ordained and served for 25 years. Arthur and Carolyn were both honored as pastors emeritus by the congregation of Second Congregational Church. After retirement, he and Carolyn settled in Gray and became active parishioners in the North Yarmouth Congregational Church. Although retired, he could often be found conducting various pastoral activities.
