STILLWATER – Arthur Irvin Read, 92, passed away early Wednesday, April 20, 2005, surrounded by his family after a brief illness. He was born May 4, 1912, in Orono, the son of the late Bert L. and Delaney (Oliver) Read. Arthur attended Orono High school. He worked for Railway Express and went on to the University of Maine for 37 years in many capacities including the steam plant, the janitor for the library, and off-duty police officer. Arthur also worked for the Stillwater Fire Department. He was a member of the Masons of Old Town and the Stillwater Federated Church. He was an avid golfer, hunter, gardener and fisherman. Arthur was very involved with his family and he loved his children and grandchildren very much. The family would like to send a sincere thank you to all the nurses and staff of Hospice of Eastern Maine for all of the tender care that was so unconditionally provided. He is survived and will be sadly missed by a sister, Doris Young of Stillwater; brother, Walter Read, of Orono; his children, Eleanor Bagley and her husband, Hazen, of Stillwater, Bernard Read and his wife, Christina, of Stillwater, Arline Deshane and her husband, Richard, of Stillwater, Allan Read and his wife, Veronica, of Skowhegan; his grandchildren, Kathleen Bagley-Marcho and her husband, Arthur, Vanessa Redman and her husband, John, Wayne Bagley and his wife, Janet, Andrew Tripp, Karen Randall and her husband, Paul, Richard Deshane Jr. and his fianc?e, Lori Ryder, Diana Savoy and her husband, Ricky, Christopher Read and his wife, Karen, Scott Read and his wife, Dawn Marie; his great-grandchildren, Trevor, Jillian, and Joshua Marcho, Andrea and Deidre Redman, Wayne Jr., Bruce and Joanne Bagley, Whitney and Lindsay Randall, Amanda and Jason Savoy, Conner Read, Laura and Logan Read, special friend Albert Niles of Old Town. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Marion; brothers, Frank, Harold, Horace, and Ralph Read; sisters, Edna Royal, Marion Ingersol, Edith Higgins, Madeline Stormann and Lois Joaquin. Friends may call 2 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, with the Rev. Howard Benson, officiating.
