PRESQUE ISLE – Arthur J. Martin, 83, died Aug. 26, 2007, at a Boston hospital. He was born June 8, 1924, in Van Buren, the son of Vital B. and Martha M. (Cyr) Martin. Arthur attended Presque Isle schools graduating in 1942. Arthur joined the U.S. Navy serving proudly in the North Atlantic and South Pacific theaters during World War II. He was employed for 40 years with New England Tele & Tele. He was a communicant of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus, a member of Pioneer Telephone, Presque Isle Country Club, where he aced a hole in one, and a charter member of the Presque Isle Curling Club. AJ was an avid sportsman, fishing, hunting and sailing throughout Aroostook. His greatest joy in later years was spending time with his wife, Ruth; children and grandchildren at the cottage on East Grand Lake. Arthur is survived by his wife, Ruth M. (Mersereau) Martin of Presque Isle; two sons, Michael Martin and his wife, Sheryl, of Houlton and Tom Martin of Mapleton; four daughters, Jeannette Condon and her husband, Terry, of Fort Fairfield, Helen Dunn and her husband, Donald, of Houlton, Mary Jane Martin-Genest of Windham, and Suzanne Martin of Thomaston; 15 grandchildren, Lindsay, Kelsey and Taylor Martin, Meagan Condon Kinney, Jacob Condon, Shannon Martin Burbee, Michele Martin Tingley, Jannel Martin, Colby and Molly Dunn, Liza and Logan Genest, Charlie, Sam and Ben Bruce; six great-grandchildren, Mackayla, Jordan, Chandler Burbee, Melissa Tingley and Wyatt and Maxwell Kenney; and one sister, Bernadette Maillett of Presque Isle; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Albert, Alphe and Rene; two sisters, Jeannette Perreault and Germaine LaPierre. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Church, Presque Isle.
