WHITING – Arthur L. Gilpatrick, 83, of Whiting passed away Sept. 20, 2004, at home surrounded by his family following complications from colon cancer. He was born July 10, 1921, in Whiting, the son of Harry L. and Myra (Leighton) Gilpatrick. Other than the time at the university and his military service during World War II, he spent his entire life in his town. Arthur was a graduate of Washington Academy in East Machias and the University of Maine at Orono. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Upon his return he owned and operated a dairy farm for many years as well as blueberry and wood lands. After retiring from farming he drove a school bus for MSAD No. 77. His public service includes town selectman, tax assessor/collector, school committee and one of the founding members of the town’s volunteer fire department of which he served as chief for many years. Arthur and Christine enjoyed square dancing and spent many years camping in Maine. He was an avid reader and loyal sports fan, enjoying basketball, and baseball, especially the Boston Red Sox. His knowledge of both current events as well as local history was unsurpassed and he was often called upon by the community for information regarding local events as well as family and property histories. Arthur loved his town and its people. He was a friend to all and was always willing when help was needed. His knowledge, sense of humor and storytelling will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Christine (McCarty) Gilpatrick of Whiting; one son, Ivan and his wife, Katherine, of Gouldsboro; one daughter, Jean Martin and her husband, Arlan, of Levant; four grandchildren, Kelly Ramlal and her husband, Bhesham, of Trinidad, Jodi Martin of Levant, Aaron Gilpatrick of Gouldsboro and Ryan Martin of Maui. He is survived by two nieces. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Alice M. Green and a brother, Carl E. Gilpatrick. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Whiting Community Center. Graveside services will be private.
