STONINGTON – Ashley B. “Punk” Mitchell, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at his home in Stonington. He was born June 16, 1919, in Brooklin, the son of Joseph and Lois Belle (Bridges) Mitchell. Punk is a founding and lifelong member of the Stonington Church of the Nazarene, and was a volunteer firefighter for the town of Stonington for many years. He was a lobsterman for 70-years, retiring at age 83. He was inducted into the Fishermen’s Hall of Fame in March of 1996. Punk is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeanette (Billings) Mitchell of Stonington; four children, Beverly Eaton and her husband, Lee, Linda McCauley and her husband, Mack, Marilyn Hardy, and Randall Mitchell and his wife, Judy, all of Stonington; his “adopted” daughters, Janet Nevells of Stonington and Viola Brown of Ellsworth; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one nephew, Ashley Torrey and his wife, Shirley, of Kittery; a special friend, Arthur Gray; and his three cats. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Joseph L. Mitchell; three sisters, Helen Mitchell, Ethel Davis, and Chestina Torrey; a brother-in-law, Sheldon Torrey; two grandchildren, Sonya Mitchell and Roger Hardy; and a special friend, Bill Gove. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at the Stonington Church of the Nazarene in Stonington. Private interment will be at Mt. Rest Cemetery, Stonington at a later date.
