WASHBURN – Athil I. Clayton Sr., 91, passed away Aug. 1, 2004, after a brief illness at the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. He was born Sept. 29, 1912, in Washburn, the son of Ira F. and Jessie (Sloat) Clayton. Athil was a potato farmer most of his life. In his latter years his farming phased out and he became employed at SAD No. 45 in Washburn, as a bus driver and custodian. During this time he became a friend and “Gramp” to many of the students and faculty. He took a special interest in all school functions, especially basketball games and tournaments, which he attended faithfully for many years. In his lifetime, he made many friends and was loved and respected highly by all. Athil was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Wade, where he attended faithfully as long as he was able. He touched the lives of all who knew him in many special ways. Athil is survived by his loving wife, Elsie (McDuff) Clayton; and six children: two daughters, Dolores Woodman and her husband, Ellsworth, Darlene McHatten and her husband, Dana; four sons, Athil Clayton Jr., Fred Clayton and his wife, Bonnie Ann, Robert Clayton and his wife, Brenda, and Paul Clayton and his fianc?e, Mary Jane LaBrecque. He is also survived by two special nieces, Laurane Theriault and Bette Lou Tilley; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Pauline Anderson; a granddaughter, Vicki Clayton; and a daughter-in-law, Anna Clayton. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday at the Dunntown Advent Christian Church, with the Rev. George McLaughlin officiating. Interment will be in Crouseville Cemetery.
