NEWBURGH and HAMPDEN – Audrey Frances (Thorndike) Smith, 92, passed away May 3, 2006, surrounded by her loving family while at a Bangor healthcare facility. She was born May 11, 1913, in Dixmont, the daughter of Ralph and Vivian (Thasker) Thorndike. Audrey lived in Newburgh for many years, and also served as Town Clerk for many years until she moved to Hampden. Audrey was known for her wonderful cooking and was the cook for the Ski Horse Ski Area and for the Penobscot Pony Club, both of Newburgh. She and her husband, Millard, owned and operated a farm in Newburgh and were dairy, poultry and market farmers. They also processed maple syrup from their farm in Newburgh. After moving to Hampden, she owned and operated a boarding home there for many years. Audrey was smart, hard working and had a quick wit, but will be remembered most for her devotion to her family. Audrey loved to go for rides and could be seen almost anywhere in the area driving around in her car, just barely seeing over the steering wheel. She was a member of the Whitcomb-Baker V.F.W. Post No. 4633 Ladies Auxiliary of Hampden. She is survived by two sons, M. Myron Smith and Josephine of Newburgh and Adelbert D. Davis and wife, Anita, of Florida; one brother, Ashley Thorndike and wife, Irene, of Binghamton, N.Y.; 13, grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Millard in 1992; her son, Richard “Sleepy” Smith in 1997; a great-grandson, Robbie Stubbs in 1990; and by two sisters, Ernestine Grant and Barbara Libby. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Dr. Debra J. Hanson, pastor of the Hampden Highlands United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Knowlton Cemetery, Newburgh.
