BROOKSVILLE – Avis Dow Poole, 89, born and raised in North Brooksville, died Friday Aug. 15, 2008, in Blue Hill, from heart complications. She graduated from North Brooksville Primary in 1929, North Brooksville Grammar in 1933, Brooksville High in 1937 and then attended Eastern State Normal School, Castine. Later she worked as a waitress in coastal villages, including East Boothbay, where she met her husband Leo “Pete” Poole. As a lifelong member of Brooksville United Methodist Church, she was continuously active in supporting the community, most recently preparing and serving a traditional lobster stew supper as a fundraiser for the church to more than 100 people. She was predeceased by her husband. She is survived by her seven children, Eloise Rhyne, Harold Poole, Elizabeth Lancaster, Lawrence Poole, Rebecca Poole, Robert Poole and Melissa Lear. She leaves 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nephews, nieces, including a great-great-great-niece, cousins; and dear friends including Gloria Coomer. Beyond her family, her role as a kind and unassuming mother extended throughout the community lending a gentleness of spirit to those who knew her. A celebration of life service will be held 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Brooksville United Methodist Church, Buck’s Harbor, with a reception afterward at Bob and Ann Poole’s home, 441 Varnumville Road, Brooks-ville. A private family burial at Mount Rest Cemetery, Brooks-ville, is planned. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Avis’ name to Brooksville United Methodist Church, P.O.
