CARIBOU – Axel Charles “Sarge” Lindgren, 85, U.S. Air Force master sergeant, retired, died May 14, 2008, in Caribou, after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 12, 1922, in New Sweden, the son of Robert and May (Tournquist) Lindgren. He attended the Woodland school and was a member of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, New Sweden, for many years. Mr. Lindgren served with the U.S. Air Force for more than 27 years, retiring as master sergeant. He served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and was a life member of Lister Knowlton Post 9389 VFW and also a member of Perkins Plourde Post 136 American Legion, Stockholm. He married Hazel (Kelley) Lindgren, who predeceased him in 2003. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Isabelle Jones of Springfield, Ore.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy Swan of Caribou, and Alexis and Larry Ward of Woodland; a special brother-in-law and his wife, Gary and JoAnn Kelley of Woodland; a special former daughter-in-law, Linda of Springfield, Ore.; his grandchildren, Erin McShea and her husband, Richard, of Fort Fairfield, Matthew Lindgren and his wife, Sharon, of Vista, Calif., Steven Swan of Kansas, Andy Swan of Virginia, and Charles Swan and his wife, Sandy, of Woodland; 13 great-grandchildren, Meagan, Derik, Christian, Nicholas and Rebkah Lindgren, Sydney and Sarah McShea, Christopher, Nathan, Heather, Phillip, Levi and Morgan Swan; several special nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou, where members of the American Legion and VFW will conduct evening memorial services 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17, in the chapel of Mockler Funeral Home with Pastor Burnham Morrell officiating.
