CARIBOU – Barbara E. (Johnson) Sutherland, 73, wife of the late Thomas A. Sutherland, died Saturday evening, Feb. 19, 2005, at a Caribou healthcare facility, after an extended illness. She was born Oct. 31, 1931, in Caribou, the daughter of Noble and Lillian (Anderson) Johnson. Raised in New Sweden, Barbara attended New Sweden and Westmanland grade schools and graduated from the Caribou High School in 1949. She was married to Thomas Hale Jan. 5, 1951, with whom she parented six children. She was later married to Thomas A. Sutherland Dec. 15, 1972. Barb enjoyed creating arts and crafts, craft shows and was known for her sewing and artwork. She attended the Presque Isle Wesleyan Church where she enjoyed Pastor Rick’s messages. Pastor Bob’s heart of gold and Pastor Scott’s “jivey” music. Barbara’s request for healing in her body took place Saturday as she went home to be with her Lord. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sutherland was predeceased by her husband, Thomas A. Sutherland Dec. 4, 2001; one brother, Ronald Johnson; and one sister, Della Hanson. Barbara is survived by three sons, Thomas M. Hale and his wife, Donna, of Westmanland, William M. Hale and his wife, Lori, of Winter Park, Fla., Robert N. Hale of Caribou; three daughters, Kristi Bell and her husband, Jim, of Caribou, Lori Johnson and her husband, Ray, of Hampden, Susan Bell and her husband, Jeff, of Caribou; three brothers, Larry Johnson and his wife, Betty, of Somers, Conn., Kenneth Johnson of Woodland (Aroostook County), Randy Johnson and his wife, Carol, of Louisville, Ky.; three sisters, Shirley Thibodeau of Holden, Mass., Janice Rice and her husband, Charles, of Norwich, Conn., Marge Cole and her husband, Everett, of Caribou; 14 grandchildren, Erika, Jessica and Michael Hale, Jeremy and Jamie Bell, Jaret and Ryan Miller, Jennifer and Jonathan Johnson, Melissa McDunnah, Ashley and Kathryn Bell, David and Thomas Hale; five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends. Friends may call 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Presque Isle Wesleyan Church, Easton Road, Presque Isle, where a funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. with Pastor Bob Blackstone officiating. Interment will take place at the New Sweden Cemetery, New Sweden, later in the spring. A time of fellowship with refreshments will be held at the Presque Isle Wesleyan Church, following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those who choose may contribute in memory of Mrs. Sutherland to the Presque Isle Wesleyan Church, P.O. Box 763, Presque Isle, ME 04769. Arrangements are in the care of the Dorsey Funeral Home, Fort Fairfield.
