BUCKSPORT – Astrid Viola (Mattson) Bourgon, 96, died Feb. 18, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Oct. 10, 1908, in Heestrand, Sweden, the daughter of Axel and Hilda (Anderson) Mattson. Astrid came to the United States in 1927 and became a United States citizen in the mid-1930’s. She married the late Nelson Bourgon in Berlin, N.H. in 1931. She traveled to many countries in Europe and South America. She lived in Brazil, Mexico, and Australia, while her husband worked there, and she learned to speak Spanish and Portuguese. Astrid loved to read, entertain, and play duplicate bridge. She enjoyed many summers and family gatherings at camp on Toddy Pond and fishing at Moosehead Lake. She was a very active member of the Franklin Street United Methodist Church, Bucksport, where she held many offices. She also was a member of the October Club, Bucksport Garden Club, Felicity Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No.195, Bucksport, served as mother advisor of Order of the Rainbow, was a Cub Scout leader and volunteered at the Bangor Mental Hospital. Astrid is survived by two sons, Henry R. Bourgon and his wife, Nancy, of Bucksport, and Ernest L. Bourgon and his wife, Florence, of Damariscotta; two siblings, Henry Mattson of Bucksport, and Stina Larson of Bengtsfors, Sweden; five grandchildren, John E. Bourgon and his wife, Cathy, of Bucksport, Michael A. Bourgon and his wife, Debra, of Bucksport, Sandra L. Goldsbury and her husband, John, of Fort Mill, S.C., Tamra Mayo and her husband, Joseph, of Wilmington, Mass., Nelson L. Bourgon of Florida; nine great-grandchildren, Adam Bourgon, Erica Chavaree and her husband, Michael, April Bourgon, Ryan Goldsbury, Michael Goldsbury, Kelly Bourgon, Alex Bourgon, Derek Mayo, Morgan Mayo; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Nelson Bourgon in March 2003; two siblings, Mary Steen, and John Johannson. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church, Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Immediately following the service, a gathering of conversation and refreshment will be held in the church hall. Spring interment will be in Silver Lake Cemetery, Bucksport. In lieu of flowers, donations in Astrid’s memory may be made to the Franklin Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1727, Bucksport, ME 04416 or to the Buck Memorial Library, P.O.
