PATTEN and TOWSON, Md. Erna Engroff, 91, passed away peacefully Oct. 28, 2005, at the Mountain Heights Healthcare Facility in Patten, after a long illness. Erna was born June 17, 1914, in Baltimore, Md., to Richard and Louisa (Luette) Schneider who owned and operated the first barber school in the city. The family moved to Baker Avenue in Catonsville, Md., in 1921. Erna graduated from Catonsville High School in 1931. She then attended beauty school and was a hair dresser in Baltimore for many years. On June 25, 1938, she married Henry L. Engroff who died in 1971. They lived in Catonsville until moving in 1953 to Piccadilly Road in Towson, Md., where she lived for 44 years and raised her family. She was a devoted wife and mother. In 1997, she moved to Patten. She is survived by a son, Dr. Richard Engroff and his wife, Margaret Cochran Engroff, of Patten; and a daughter, Nancy Gould and her husband, Dr. W. Michael Gould, of Severna Park, Md. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Dr. Stephen Engroff and his wife, Dr. Diane Ray Engroff, of State College, Pa., Daniel Engroff of Manchester, N.H., Dr. Abigail Hughes and her husband, Dr. Peter Hughes, of Portsmouth, N.H., Rebecca Engroff of Ellsworth, Kristin Drake and her husband, Rev. David Drake, of Raleigh, N.C. and Bill Gould of Hagerson, Md. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Sarah, Adam, and Stanley Engroff, and Keating, Gracie, and Annie Drake; a sister, Hildegard Hahn of Catonsville, Md.; a niece and nephew, Hildegard Suiter of Ellicott City, Md. and Edward Hahn of Poughkeepsee, N.Y.; and a special cousin, Annelore Steigler of Hunt Valley, Md. The family would like to express special thanks to all the staff at the Mountain Heights Healthcare Facility in Patten and the Senior Day Program for all their loving care for Erna over the last eight years. Also special thanks to Gayleen Watson whose wonderful help made it possible for Erna to live at home for five of these eight years. Funeral arrangements are by the Bowers Funeral Home of Island Falls and the Witzke Funeral Home of Baltimore, Md. Funeral services will take place in Baltimore.
