HOULTON – Barbara MacNair Edwards, 81, died April 16, 2006, at a local hospital. She was born Oct. 25, 1924, in Houlton, the daughter of Leonard and Faye (Mackey) MacNair. Barbara was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal, and the Episcopal Church Women’s Group. She taught in Houlton schools for 10 years prior to retirement and claimed “it took me 10 years to get out of the 7th grade.” She was a member of the BPW, the AAUW, the Great Books Club, Retired Teachers Assoc., a volunteer for Rotary Meals and a member of the Houlton Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She loved making quilts for the Episcopal Church raffle, quilt shows and Houlton Regional Hospital Newborn Nursery. During her illness, she was unable to believe so many cared so much and gave her encouragement and acknowledged her important role in their lives. Barbara is survived by three daughters, Leslie Cole of Daytona Beach, Fla., Andrea and Peter Smaligo of Houlton, Kim and Peter Cheney of Blaine; five grandchildren, Ted Calef of Florida, Allison Clark of Florida, Benjamin and Ericah Cheney of Blaine, Greg Smaligo of Houlton; two great-grandchildren, Stephen Calef and Erika Cole; one sister, Gennette and Steve Hawley of Batavia, N.Y.; four nieces, Chicky MacArthur, Kathy Stoton, Barbara Cotta and Susan Walbridge; and two very special friends, Louise Hamilton and Lavona Varney. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Edwards. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal with the Rev. Leslie Nesin and Deacon Jessie Drysdale officiating.
