MONTICELLO – Bernard H. Swimm, 77, passed away Oct. 22, 2003, at a local hospital. He was born March 6, 1926, at Monticello, the son of Jesse and Beulah (White) Swimm. Bernie was in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Tennessee during World War II. A life-time member of the VFW, he was commander of Post No. 2744 for eight years. After his duty with the Navy, he returned to Maine and worked on farms and constructions. He worked for H.E. Sargent of Stillwater for 14 years, was the town foreman for Monticello for eight years and a welder for Steel Stone Industries until his retirement in 1995. He enjoyed going to Lowery’s camp for hunting and fishing trips. Snowsledding was also a passion, but he especially enjoyed his “John Deere tractor.” He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and a helping hand to all. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barbara (Welch) Swimm; three daughters, Roberta Hogan, Lorraine Kinney and Lynne McGary; eight grandchildren, Jon Bridges and his wife, Tami, Lori Jewell and her husband, Allen, Morgan Kinney, Brady Bridges and his friend, Heidi, Paul Albright and his friend, Brandi, Jacob Hovey, Jirad Kinney and his wife, Kim, Lucas McGary; 12 great-grandchildren including his constant companion for seven years, Ethan Jewell; five brothers, Garth Swimm and his wife, Carol, Glen Swimm and his wife, Judy, Paul Swimm and his wife, Sue, Bob Swimm and his wife, Judy, Dale Swimm and his wife, Pam; five sisters, Doris Foster, Della Mills, Autis Socoby and her husband, Russell, Jeanette Swallow, Ruth Swimm; two sisters-in-law, Carol Swimm and Hazel Swimm; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, Lawrence, Lee, Fred and Vaughn; two sisters, Rita Rafford and Lorraine Wilson. Friends may call at the Dunn Funeral Home 11 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at 12 noon with the Rev. Randall Burns and the Rev. Steven Straubel officiating. Interment will be in the Foster Cemetery, Monticello.
