OTTER CREEK – Bernard L. “Bun” Holmes, 91, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at the home of his son, Terry Holmes of Atkinson, N.H., after a brief illness. Mr. Holmes, the adopted son of Maurice and Annie (Durgan) Holmes, was born Nov. 20, 1915, in Lubec. He attended schools in Cutler and East Machias, and graduated from Washington Academy in 1934. During his school years, Mr. Holmes was a member of the baseball, basketball and track teams, and continued to be active for many more years in local town and American Legion baseball programs. From 1934 through 1935, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, CC Camps, on Mount Desert Island. On Dec. 31, 1936, he married Alice Buzzell. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the South Pacific. After the war, he worked for 35 years in the plumbing trade on Mount Desert Island. He was a lifetime member of the VFW 109, Ellsworth and American Legion Post 103, Northeast Harbor. An avid sportsman, he was a member of the Mount Desert Island Rod and Gun Club, the Hancock Fireman’s Association and a past fire chief in Otter Creek. Mr. Holmes, who started dancing at age 9, could be seen almost every Saturday night at one of the local VFW or Legion dances. Mr. Holmes was a longtime resident of Mount Desert and a resident of Otter Creek for more than 50 years. He was predeceased by both parents; his wife, Alice (Buzzell) Holmes; his son, George Ronald Holmes; two brothers and three sisters. He is survived and remembered by his daughters, Sandra H. Modeen of Otter Creek and Bernadette (Holmes) Moulton and son-in-law, Paul Moulton of Gainesville, Ga.; his sons, Terrance Fulton Holmes and daughter-in-law, Wenke Hol-mes of Atkinson, N.H., and Douglas Paul Holmes of Gloucester, Mass.; seven grandchildren, William Mo-deen III, Michael Modeen, Kelly McCloud, Christopher Moulton, Heidi Sifferlen, Katrine Holmes and Britt Holmes; six great-grandchildren, Josh McInvale, Matthew Ryan Doss, Maxwell Modeen, Olivia Modeen, Coady Modeen, Sarah McCloud; and many nieces and nephews, as well as a special friend and dancing partner, Ferne Brown. A memorial service will be held at Fernald’s Funeral Home, Somesville, in the late spring, date and time to be announced.
