TOPSHAM – Bertha E. McCafferty, 84, of Mallett Drive, died Thursday, May 4, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Mellissa Madden in Oakton, Va. She was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Patten, the daughter of Roy and Muriel Wheaton Glidden. Bertha graduated from Patten Academy and later completed a LPN program and worked in that capacity in the Boston, Mass. area. As a homemaker most of her life, Mrs. McCafferty also enjoyed cooking, knitting, reading, crocheting, and playing bridge. She married Alfred O. McCafferty Feb. 2, 1947, in Island Falls. He passed away Sept. 9, 2001. Surviving are her son, Brent McCafferty of Farmington; three daughters, Mellissa Madden of Oakton, Va., Susan DeNobile of Deptford, N.J., and Jane Ross of Center Barnstead, N.H.; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick, where a funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Burial will be noon Wednesday at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
