MACHIAS – Bertram “Jim” J. Cloney, 62, passed away June 4, 2008, after a valiant battle with cancer, at Sunrise Health Care Facility, Jonesport. He was born June 28, 1945, in Calais, the son of Bertram J. Cloney Jr. and Nancy (Yeaton) Cloney. Jim graduated from Washington Academy. Shortly after, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army. Jim moved to Connecticut and worked for several years at Pratt & Whitney. Upon moving back to Machias, Jim worked as bookkeeper for Schoppee’s Dairy. Jim worked in car sales for Sabean Motors. Upon retirement, he was self-employed as a certified public accountant. Jim was a 36-year member of American Legion Post No. 9, Machias. He was also a member of Sons of the American Legion. Jim was actively involved in the children’s program for the American Legion. Jim was an avid gardener and enjoyed watching television, and working on his computer. He is survived by his mother, Nancy Grant of Machias; daughters, Brenda Hedtke and husband, Rick, and Denise Pennell and husband, Timothy, all of Leonardtown, Md.; grandchildren, Amber, Katlynn, McKenna, Delaney and Grant; longtime companion, Norma Haynie; brothers and sisters, Carol Ann, Sharon, and Paul; special aunt, Liz Mathews; the Vane family; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Bertram J. Cloney Jr.; stepfather, Ralph Grant; stepbrother, Gary Grant; many aunts and uncles. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Jacksonville Cemetery. All are welcome to a time of remembrance and refreshments after the service at American Legion Post No. 9. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s memory to American Legion Children’s Program Post No. 9, 16 Court St., Machias, ME 04654.
