NEWPORT and FALMOUTH Marion Louder Hanson, 98, wife of the late Francis A. Hanson and longtime resident of Newport, passed away June 10, 2008, with her family by her side. Marion was born Jan. 25, 1910, in Bristol, Pa., the daughter of Moses and Ada (Walmsley) Louder. The Louder family moved to Pittsfield, in 1920. Marion graduated from Maine Central Institute, MCI, in 1928. While attending MCI, she was a member of the girl’s state championship basketball team. On Dec. 25, 1932, she married Francis A. Hanson. They moved to Newport, where they raised their two children. Francis and Marion owned and operated the family businesses Hanson Drugstore, Hanson Hardware and Hanson Insurance Agency. Marion retired after the passing of her husband, Feb. 17, 1972. While living in Newport she was an active community member. Marion was the past president of Newport Women’s Club and Sebasticook Garden Club. She was a member of High Street Congregational Church. She was one of the founders of the first Girl Scout troop in Newport and was a director of the former Penobscot Savings Bank, Bangor. Marion became a “family matriarch” so to speak, and with great interest, love and support, she saw three generations attain their college education and become successful individuals. She will continue to be fondly referred to as, Mum, Mumzie, Grammie Marion, Meme and Meme M. She held her family before all else. Marion moved to Augusta in 1988 to be active with family and friends. She enjoyed years of travel and family growth. She enjoyed quiet activities of cards, knitting and reading. In 1997, she moved to Falmouth, to Ocean View, then to The Falmouth House, in 2006. Marion is survived by her daughter, Frances “Chummy” Hamilton and her husband, Alan, of Greenwood; a son, Dr. Arthur L. Hanson and his wife, Arlene, of Portland; four grandsons, Jeffrey A. Hamilton and wife, Diane, of Hampden, Gregory C. Hamilton and wife, Wanda, of Dixfield, David A. Hanson of Boston, and Carl F. Hanson of Portland; two granddaughters, Kimberly Hamilton-Bodwell and husband, Barry, of Gorham, N.H., and Christine H. Haas and husband, Jeremy, of Reston, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Staci H. Hamilton of Dixfield, Alisa J. Hamilton, Jason D. Hamilton, both of Hampden and Allison P. Haas of Reston, Va.; and two great-stepgranddaughters, Heather and Samantha Sanborn of Hampden; several nieces and nephews, whom she adored. The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of Ocean View, Falmouth; The Falmouth House; Springbrook Nursing Care; Falmouth By The Sea; and Beacon Hospice for their compassion and excellence in care provided to Marion. Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. June 28 at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating.
