BAR HARBOR – Bessie Bernice (Farley) Black, 98, died July 18, 2008, with family by her side at Sonogee Rehabilitation & Living Center. She was born Sept. 19, 1909, the daughter of Herman Farley and Hattie Kelley of Tremont. Bessie, who had seven brothers and sisters, was born and raised in the Farley family, which was located at Bernard Corner. She attended the old elementary school also located in Bernard. She married William Morris Jr. and the couple lived first in the village of Hall Quarry and later on Lopaus Point Road, Bernard, where they raised two children, Avis Sandra and Warren P. Higgins. Bessie worked at the sardine factory in Southwest Harbor and Jackson Laboratory, and she enjoyed dancing, making model houses and writing poetry. She was widowed in 1963, but later was remarried to Samuel Black of Southwest Harbor and lived at Norwood Cove apartments. Bessie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and David L. Lunt of Frenchboro; her son, Warren P. Higgins and his wife, Lisa, of Sullivan; and her sister, Shirley Eaton of Southwest Harbor. She is survived by seven grandchil-dren, David W. Lunt of Frenchboro, Daniel Lunt of Frenchboro, Dean Lunt of Yarmouth, Darcy Higgins of Ellsworth, Warren P. Higgins Jr. of Ells-worth, Luke Higgins of Mount Desert and Katie Higgins of Sullivan; by 10 great-grandchil-dren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husbands, William Morris Jr. and Samuel Black; as well four brothers, Raymond, Everett, Edwin and Robert; and two sisters, Jennie Higgins and Lula Higgins. A graveside service will take place 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor. Friends who wish may make donations in her honor to Emmaus Homeless Shelter, P.O.
