BANGOR – Betsy Economy Preble, 53, wife of David H. Preble passed away July 21, 2006, at her Bangor home. She was born Aug. 9, 1952, in Bangor, a daughter of George J. and Anita (Thanas) Economy. Betsy graduated from Bangor High School and attended the University of Maine. She assisted her family in the operation of the family business, the former Checkmate restaurant, at Westgate Mall. She served as a board member of the YWCA and was a member of the Junior League. She most recently had been employed at York and Stewart Dining Commons, at the University of Maine, where she had many friends among staff and students. She was a mentor to many students who were involved in dining services. She and David greatly enjoyed their cottage on the coast, the entire Corea area and the many friends they both made there. For Betsy, her family, especially her children were the most important part of her life. She will be remembered as a loving and kind wife, mother and sister. In addition to her husband of Bangor, she is survived by son, Christopher Roberts of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and daughter, Alexandra Roberts of Old Town; David’s son, Matthew D. Preble of Millinocket; brother, George J. Economy and wife, Linda Long, of Bainbridge, Wash.; sister, Wendy E. Kallergis and husband, Nick, of Coral Gables, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Nicholas and Katherine Kallergis, Evelyn, Alison and William Economy; aunts, Lil Tasho of Brockton, Mass., Judith Thanas Anderson of Newton, Mass., Connie Abele and husband, Guido, of San Jose, Calif., Ellen Prifti and husband, Basil, of Tucker, Ga.; and several cousins. Relatives and friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, French Street, Bangor with Fr. John Wingert officiating.
