PALMYRA – Betty M. Palmer, 84, died July 6, 2008, at a Pittsfield hospital after a long period of ill health. She was born March 26, 1924, in Racine, Wis., the daughter of Roland R. and Jessy A. (Young) Thornton. She attended schools in North Racine, Wis. After many years, Betty returned to school and graduated from Nokomis Regional High in 1977. She was married to Manley A. Palmer Jr., who died March 5, 1973. Betty was a nurses’ aide for more than 18 years at Pittsfield Convalescent Home, Pittsfield. She attended Peoples United Methodist Church, Newport. She enjoyed working at the Share, which was later called Serve of Maine. She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Sheila and Doug Pooler of Palmyra and Dexter; one grandson, Nathan C. Later of Palmyra; two great-granddaughters, Gwen and Xevlynn; three brothers, Lloyd H. Thornton of Union Grove, Wis., Emerson R. Thornton of Burlington, Wis., and William C. Thornton of Racine, Wis.; also her extended family of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lloyd Palmer of Columbus, Ohio, Verne Palmer of Newport, Janice Sheldon of Palmyra and Marvis Huntington of Detroit; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, Eugene R. Thornton; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in the family lot at Riverside Cemetery, Newport, with the Rev. George Darling officiating.
