Swans Island – Burton E. “Burt” Wheaton, 80, died March 7, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. He was born May 1, 1924, on Swans Island, the son of Edward B. and Georgia (White) Wheaton. Burt started his career when he was nine years old, working as a stern man. Throughout his life he also worked as a longlinner, fished for tuna and was a lobsterman. When Burt wasn’t fishing he built and repaired houses and served as a caretaker. He was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Minturn. Burt is survived by his beloved wife of almost 59 years, Eva M. (Staples) Wheaton; two sons, James Wheaton and wife, Suzette and Stephen Wheaton and wife, Jacqueline, all of Swans Island; two brothers, John Wheaton of Swans Island and Robert Wheaton of Plymouth, Mass.; two sisters, Ethel Staples of Swans Island and Annie Wheaton of Bar Harbor; and four grandchildren; Betsy, Benjamin, Patrick and Heather. Burt was predeceased by a brother, Nelson Wheaton and one grandson, Jamie Wheaton. Friends are invited to call 10-11:30 a.m. Friday, March 11, 2005, at the Atlantic Baptist Church, Minturn, where funeral services will be held at 12 Noon, with the Rev. Benjamin Redman officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Atlantic. Contributions in Burt’s memory may be made to the Swans Island Fire Department or the Swans Island Ambulance, Swans Island, ME 04685.
