CALAIS – Byron Elliott Burke, 58, husband of Winola Bridges Burke, died Sunday, April 17, 2005, at Calais Regional Hospital. Mr. Burke was born July 24, 1946, in Lubec, son of Malcolm and Violet (Bryant) Burke. Byron was a retired U.S. Army sergeant major. He served on active duty for 22 years. Upon his retirement, he served as the comptroller and then manager of Calais. Byron was the administrator of the Saint Croix Regional Family Health Center in Princeton for a number of years. Byron and his son Byron Jr. started B&B Delivery Service out of Calais, which serves Washington, Hancock, and Penobscot Counties. Surviving are his wife of 37 years and his two sons, Byron Jr. and his wife, Abygail and Douglas Norman and his wife, Brandii; nine grandchildren, Samuel, BJ, Shep, Rachael, Grace, Carsen, Katlyn, Peter and Darian; his brothers, Malcolm, Franklin, David and his wife, Ginny, John, Doug and his wife, Joyce, and Bruce; a sister, June; several aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews; three brothers-in-law, Ralph, Sidney and Donald; and a sister-in-law, Iva. Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, at which time a memorial service will be officiated by Father David Sivret. Burial will follow with military honors in Calais Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Byron’s memory to the American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
