BREWER and HERMON Calvin E. Hewes, 72, died Aug. 2, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born May 27, 1936, in Brewer, the son of Edwin and Edith (Sprague) Hewes. Calvin served in the U.S. Air Force in radio communications. He was employed by Eastern Fine Paper for many years prior to his retirement. He enjoyed reading westerns, hunting, fishing, bowling, and playing Beano with his family and friends. He also loved his Boston Red Sox and former member, Roger Clemens, was his favorite player. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Jill and Scott Ashe of Glenburn; two sisters, Margaret Bachelder of Hermon and Jeannette and her husband, Lester Lord, of Brewer; two grandchildren, Cameron and Caitlin Ashe; numerous special nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Jeff Hewes; and seven brothers, Clarence, Robert, Roy, Paul, Harold, Carroll “Buddy” and Jerry Hewes. Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Graveside services with military honors will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor, with the Rev. Roland Nadeau, Catholic chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital, officiating.
