STEUBEN – Calvin Stokes, 70, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born April 24, 1933, in Norfolk, Va., the son of Douglas and Mary (James) Stokes. Calvin greatly enjoyed deep-sea fishing. He fished the sacred waters of Downeast Maine to the mighty Congo River of East Africa. Calvin belonged to the National Maritime Union for 30 years. He held a deep love of the ocean and also for deer hunting. Calvin will be remembered as a loving husband, father and uncle to his family. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Darlene M. (Smith) Stokes, of Steuben; four children, Selina Sites and her husband, Joe, Calvin Stokes Jr., all of Orlando, Fla., Douglas Stokes and Leon Stokes, both of Steuben; three grandchildren, James and Arlethia Miley of Bronx, N.Y. and Arlina Sites of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Irene Billups and her husband, Samuel of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jacqueline Brown and her husband, George, of New Orleans, La; a brother, Edward and his wife, Mazey, of Norfolk, Va.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Calvin was predeceased by a daughter, Arlethia; two sisters, Glorice Ray and Mary Clay; and two brothers, James and Earl Stokes. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, March 26, at the parish hall of Steuben, with the Rev. Ambrose Rolfe officiating.
