OXBOW PLANTATION – Carl L. Sherman Jr., 74, died Dec. 29, 2003, at his Oxbow residence. He was born in Masardis, Aug. 14, 1929, the son of Carl and Jessie (MacDonald) Sherman. Carl spent his childhood living and working, first in Masardis, then in Oxbow, where he met and married Rita Junkins. As newlyweds, Carl and Rita worked for Milton and Minna Hall at Munsungun Lake. Carl was a registered Maine guide and continued to guide sportsmen throughout his life, most recently for The Oxbow Lodge and The Homestead Lodge of Oxbow. Carl served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. Upon his return from military service, he worked for the Great Northern Paper Co. for the next 35 years. Together, he and Rita raised five children. Following his retirement, Carl continued to work clearing and grooming trails for the Oxbow/Masardis Snowmobile Club, doing road construction for M. Rafford Construction Co., and helping friends and neighbors on their various construction projects. Carl worked hard, but also played hard. He was most at home in the outdoors, enjoying time at The River Camp with family and friends, his month at hunting camp, fishing, snowmobiling, or just riding in the woods. He was a fine canoe man and knew the Aroostook River like the back of his hand. Carl was a member and past Master of the Masonic Pioneer Lodge No. 72, AF & AM of Ashland, a member of the Oxbow/Masardis Snowmobile Club, the LeBlanc-Junkins, VFW Post No. 9699 of Ashland, the AmVets Post No. 49, and the American Legion, Grass-Goding Post No. 208 of Masardis. In addition to his devoted wife, Rita (Junkins) Sherman of Oxbow, he is survived, loved, and respected by his five children and their families: son, Steven and wife, Judy, of Oxbow; son, Scott and his wife, Lisa, and their daughters, Jennifer and Caitlin of Masardis; daughter, Susan Beaulier and her husband, John, and their son, Jordan, of Ashland; daughter, Sharon Craig her husband, Nelson, and their son, Nicholas of Masardis; daughter, Sheila Nemer her husband, Bill, and their children, Ashley and Carl of Ashland. He also leaves a brother, Don Merrill his wife, Deanne, and their family of Milo; one sister, Shirley Cotton her husband, Mickey, and their family of Bahama, N.C.; a brother, Terrence Sherman of Baltimore, Md.; a special niece, Cindy Fanelli of Flowery Branch, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Sherman and her family of Olamon, and Anna Sherman and her family of Monson. In addition to his parents, Carl was predeceased by brothers, Glenwood and Derle Sherman; and sister, Maxine Dyer. Carl particularly treasured his many friends old and new. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his loyalty, love of the outdoors, strong work ethic and quick sense of humor. Relatives and friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Union Congregational Church, Sheridan Road, Ashland. A funeral service will be held at the church 1 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Thomas L. Caton officiating. In lieu of flowers, Carl’s family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Oxbow Church, in care of Kathleen Currier, Oxbow, 04764 or to the Masonic Pioneer Lodge Building Fund, in care of David Basley, PO Box 517, Ashland, 04732.
