LUBEC – Carleton C. Cheney Sr., 88, went to be with his beloved wife, Thyra, Sept. 30, 2006. He was born Sept. 25, 1918, in Lubec, the son of the late Hoyt and Inez (Brown) Cheney. During his youth, Carleton played professional baseball with the Boston Braves. He worked as a state fish inspector in the sardine factory for most of his life. In addition to the work at the sardine factory, he also worked in the woods and lobster fished. Carleton was an avid hunter. He also enjoyed his hunting dogs. He is survived by his children, Lee Green of Lubec, Pat Robertson of Brewer, Stephen Cheney of Florida, Clifford Cheney of Charlotte, Carleton Cheney Jr. of Alaska, Margaret Lanoue of South Dakota, Jeri Malloch of Bangor and Thyra Kelley of Lubec; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Carleton will always be fondly remembered by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Grampe.” In addition to his wife, Carleton was predeceased by a daughter, Nikki Coggins. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Christian Temple Church, Lubec, with the Rev. Alan Andraeas officiating. Burial will be after at Hallett Cemetery, Lubec.
