KILMARNOCK, Va., and SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Carol E. Haaland, 66, died July 24, 2007. A retired teacher and golf and tennis coach, Mrs. Haaland was also the former first lady of Gettysburg College and the University of New Hampshire, where her husband served as president. She was an avid tennis player and in later years became an avid golfer. Mrs. Haaland and husband, Gordon, enjoyed sailing the coast of Maine and sailboat racing, especially in recent years, the annual Downeast Race Week. Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Gordon A. Haaland; a daughter, Lynn and husband, Michael Kohler; a son, Paul and wife, Betty Meh-Haaland; grandchildren, Dylan and Dyson Haaland, and Haakon and Gunnar Kohler; sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Mark Dodge; several beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial celebration was held at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club, Kilmarnock, Va. Also a private service was held in Maine and another memorial celebration will be held at Gettysburg College in the fall. Memorials may be made to Carol E.
