SEAL HARBOR – Carolyn (Gott) Liebow died peacefully in her sleep June 12, 2007, just short of her 96th birthday, and after a long illness. She fought very hard during her last years to maintain her independence and live with dignity at her home in Seal Harbor. Carolyn was born at home in Southwest Harbor, the daughter of Everton Gott and Julia Norwood. She graduated from Pemetic High School as valedictorian of her class of 13. When her mother died in childbirth; at age eight, she became head of the household. Carolyn felt the call to become a nurse after working for many years with Dr. George Neal. She went on to Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, and then joined the Yale Medical Unit of the U.S. Army when World War II began. She served on many islands across the South Pacific, caring for front-line casualties. There she met the love of her life and her future husband, Dr. Averill Liebow. They married after the war, when he had completed his work in Hiroshima, Japan, studying the devastating med-ical effects of the atom bomb. They then settled in Woodbridge, Conn., where Averill continued his work as a world-renowned professor of pathology at Yale. Carolyn left nursing to raise her three sons. She was very active in church work at the First Church of Christ, Woodbridge, Conn. In 1968, she moved the family to San Diego, where Averill was the first chairman of the department of pathology at the new medical school. The family came to Maine every summer to their home on Great Cranberry Island, where they enjoyed many years of peace and togetherness. She is survived by her three children, Dr. Paul Averill Liebow of Bucksport, Milton Charles Liebow of Southwest Harbor and Robert Everton Liebow of Somesville; and six grandchildren, Sarah, Megan, Abby, Caitlin, Joshua and Jessye. A small private service will be held at the family property on the shore of the Tide Pool on Cranberry Island later this summer. Contributions in Carolyn’s memory may be made to the Cranberry Island Ladies Aid. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com
