HAMPDEN – Carroll Dana Astbury, 58, formerly of Orrington, died unexpectedly Dec. 29, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 17, 1948, in Castine, the son of Arthur and Pauline (Gray) Astbury. Carroll graduated from George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill, valedictorian of the Class of 1966. He graduated cum laude from Bowdoin College with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Class of 1970. He was a petty officer second class in the U.S. Navy, serving as a communications technician in Bremerhaven and Augsburg, Germany, from 1971 through 1974. He then worked for the State of Maine Department of Labor as a research analyst from 1975 to 1983 and then went to work for the Bangor Daily News first in the promotion department, then as a business writer, business editor and news editor from 1983 to the time of his death. He relished the opportunity his career at the newspaper gave him to know so many in the community and thrived on the daily challenge the production of the newspaper provided. He was particularly proud of playing a key role in getting the newspaper published during the Ice Storm of 1998. His many interests included horseback riding, golf, music, playing guitar and reading. He will be most remembered for his passionate love of sports, especially the Patriots and Red Sox. He was most honored in 2004 when his son asked him to be his best man, and he was looking forward to the birth of his first grandchild. Carroll is survived by his parents, his wife of 35 years, Leslie (Carver) Astbury of Hampden; his son, William and wife, Kristin, of Collegeville, Pa.; his brother, Randy and wife, Kerryn, of Blue Hill; his sister-in-law, Charlotte Harlan and husband, George, of Reading, Mass.; six nieces and nephews, five great-nieces and great-nephews, many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, including his doctor, Jean Benson.
