SWANVILLE and BUCKSPORT – Cecil Derwood Sherman, 89, passed away April 15, 2007, at a Belfast hospital, after a brief stay. He was born Aug. 4, 1917, in Oakfield, the third child of Beecher and Edith (Hamm) Sherman. His family soon moved to Brooks, where Cecil spent his childhood. The family then moved to Bucksport in the early 1930s, where Cecil graduated from high school. He joined the merchant marines during World War II and saw many foreign countries during the war. Cecil loved the woods, and going to camp in Mariaville. He thought well of all those he met, and was loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed bowling and throwing horseshoes with his best friend, John Gray and many other friends. He retired from St. Regis Paper Co., in 1974, and had a long happy retirement. Cecil is survived by his sister, Nola Soper and her husband, Parker; grandson, Stanley Achorn; granddaughter, Stephanie Kraft; stepdaughter, Kathy George and her husband, Alfred, with whom he resided; stepsons, Harold Hopkins, Ronald Hopkins and Vinal Dewitt; great-grandchildren, Mandy Worden, Jason Achorn, Harold Hopkins Jr., Wesley Hopkins, Skyler Hopkins, Seth Hopkins and Vinal Dewitt Jr.; many nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren. Cecil never had a child of his own, but one would have thought all were his kids, as he loved all children. Cecil was predeceased by his parents; sister, Jean; brothers, Avon and Walter; two wives, Angie and Lyna. Per Cecil’s request, there will be no funeral service. A graveside memorial service will be announced at a later date by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. Cecil loved animals and those who desire may make a donation to the animal shelter of their choice.
