BANGOR – Charles A. Helfen, 81, husband of Rita Helfen for 52 years died Aug. 8, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Baileyville, the son of Michael and Elizabeth Helfen. Charles was educated in Baileyville, and graduated from Beals College in Bangor, and the University of Maine, Orono. He was a Sergeant in the United States Army North Atlantic period South Pacific, Okinawan and Korean occupation forces during WWII. Charles was an IRS agent for more than 40 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Charles loved sports and especially loved watching his grandchildren play hockey and baseball. He was a Communicate of St. Mary’s Parish for 52 years. Surviving in addition to his wife, Rita, are three children, Charles Helfen Jr. of Levant, Ann H. Wheeler of Hermon, and Richard Helfen and his wife, Kathie of Brewer; four very special grandchildren who called Charles “Hoopa” are Matthew, Erin, and K.K. Helfen, and Ben Wheeler. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Margaret Hooper. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 754 Ohio St. Bangor, with the Rev. Thomas Lequin Pastor, Presider. Interment will be in Mt.
